Activity Report for November/December
Tzu Chi Northern California Emergency Response Team put together an instructor training class for the Community Disaster Education Program on November 30th, 2008.
The instructor was John Buckle from American Red Cross, Santa Clara Valley Chapter.
If you had taken the [Shelter Operations] class, then you would also know John as he was also the instructor for that class.
There were a total of 23 instructors who went through the entire class and received the CDEP Instructor certificate. This certificate is recognized throughout the entire US continent and accepted by the ARC chapters.
Why did we have the CDEP Instructor Training?
The objective of this “Instructor training” class is for the American Red Cross to cross train Tzu Chi volunteers to become a certified Red Cross CDE trainer, and to reach out to our Mandarin and/or Cantonese speaking communities so that our volunteers will be aware of how to prepare and to protect themselves in time of disasters such as earthquake in this region.
What Impacts does CDEP have on me?
There are two level of impacts by the CDEP
1. Tzu Chi Foundation would recruit volunteers with languages that are familiar to the Tzu Chi and Chinese communities, receive the training as a instructor, using the information and materials provided by ARC, our volunteers then reach out to the communities and deliver the disaster education training classes. The class materials not only will benefit the instructors themselves but also the communities as a whole.
2. TCNW ERT has been working very closely with the ARC/SCV chapter in the past 3 years, the ERT would complement with the ARC and operate as a partner organization to help the community
New American Red Cross Organization
In order to better serve the community, the Palo Alto and the Santa Clara Valley Chapters are merging to form a bigger and more encompassing organization. TCNW ERT will be putting together a meeting so both organizations will meet each other face to face to familiarize each other with the new team members. Stay tuned for more details to come.
